5 Signs You Need Gut Testing (not another cleanse)

You’ve been told your labs are “normal.” You’ve tried the elimination diets, the probiotics, maybe even a cleanse or two. And yet—something still feels off.

Here’s what most people miss: your gut doesn’t need more random interventions. It needs you to actually listen to what it’s telling you.

Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that help you digest food, absorb nutrients, regulate immunity, produce neurotransmitters, and influence your mood and energy. But when that balance is disrupted? Your body sends signals. Most people misinterpret these as personal failures instead of clues that something needs attention.

These symptoms are information—clues about what's happening in your gut.

There is a way to rebalance things so you can feel genuinely good again. The first step is recognizing the patterns:

Sign #1: Bloating That’s Become Your “Normal”

When was the last time you felt comfortably flat after eating? If you can’t remember, that’s your gut asking for attention.

Occasional bloating is normal. But if you’re waking up flat and ending every day looking pregnant, that’s a signal. Chronic bloating can point to SIBO, insufficient digestive enzymes, or dysbiosis (an imbalance of bacteria in your gut).

What to do: Keep a simple food-symptom journal for one week. Note what you eat, when, and how you feel. Patterns will emerge—and those patterns are valuable data. If bloating is your baseline, a comprehensive stool test can reveal what’s driving it and help you address root causes instead of guessing.

Sign #2: Skin Issues 

Acne that won’t quit. Eczema that comes and goes. Psoriasis flares. Rosacea that’s getting worse. Unexplained hives.

Your skin often reflects what’s happening in your gut. When your gut is inflamed, inflammatory compounds travel through your bloodstream and affect your skin’s protective barrier. Research shows SIBO is significantly more prevalent in people with rosacea, and there’s a notable connection between inflammatory bowel conditions and psoriasis.

What to do: Before adding another serum or prescription cream, look upstream. A comprehensive stool test can check for inflammatory markers and dysbiosis that may be showing up on your skin. When you address internal inflammation at its source, clearer skin often follows—sometimes surprisingly quickly.

Sign #3: Energy Crashes That Caffeine Can’t Fix

You slept eight hours but still can’t get out of bed. By 2pm you’re dragging, reaching for another coffee just to push through.

Your gut is where nutrients get absorbed and where your body extracts fuel from food. When your gut lining is compromised or your microbiome is imbalanced, absorption suffers—even if you’re eating all the “right” foods.

This is especially true for iron, ferritin, and vitamin D. All three depend on a healthy gut for proper absorption. You can supplement consistently, but if your gut isn’t functioning optimally, levels won’t budge.

What to do: Start with labs—ask for a full iron panel, ferritin, and vitamin D. If levels are low despite adequate intake, that’s a red flag pointing to gut absorption issues. A comprehensive stool test can identify whether compromised gut lining or imbalanced microbiome is sabotaging your energy. Meanwhile, slow down at meals, chew thoroughly (20-30 chews per bite), and eat without distractions.

Sign #4: Mood Swings, Anxiety, or Brain Fog

You feel fine one minute, irritable the next. Your thinking feels cloudy. You’re more anxious, but nothing has changed.

Your gut and brain communicate constantly through the gut-brain axis. The vagus nerve physically connects them, and your gut produces approximately 90% of your body’s serotonin. When your gut is inflamed, brain function is affected. When your microbiome is imbalanced, neurotransmitter production is disrupted.

What to do: If you’ve been told “it’s just stress” but you know something deeper is going on, trust that instinct. I’ve never worked with a gut health client who wasn’t also experiencing anxiety, low mood, or brain fog. A comprehensive stool test can identify imbalances affecting your mental clarity as much as your digestion. When you address what’s happening in the gut, improvements in mood and focus often follow.

Sign #5: Your Bathroom Habits Are Off

The “rule of 3s”: more than three bowel movements per day, or going longer than three days without one, falls outside the typical range.

If you know every restroom location along your routes, or can’t remember your last bowel movement, your gut needs attention. Dysbiosis, enzyme insufficiency, infections, and inflammation can all cause irregular bowel patterns.

What to do: Track patterns for one to two weeks—note when you go and use the Bristol Stool Chart to identify the type. A comprehensive stool test can identify dysbiosis, enzyme issues, and inflammation revealing root causes. Once you understand what’s creating the imbalance, you can address it directly.
